With the addition of Jorge Masvidal into the UFC 251 line-up, ‘Fight Island’ instantly got bigger and better.

That’s no offence intended for Gilbert Burns, whose chance at Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title was taken away thanks to a positive Covid-19 test.

However, Masvidal and Usman have bad blood and the war of words have been raging for months, especially since they nearly came to blows at a Super Bowl media day earlier this year.

Now, the pair will fight over Usman’s welterweight title at UFC’s Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

Masvidal has called the champion a coward in recent days and insists an early knockout is incoming.

Usman secured the welterweight crown by defeating long-reigning champion Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 and he did it by relying on his superior wrestling skills.

He suffocated Woodley and prevented his rival from firing off any of his explosive attacks and drained him of the energy he’d need to do so.

That’s been a recurring theme in Usman fights, but he showed another side of his game in his clash with Colby Covington at UFC 245 in December.

Covington had been his loud, brash self in the build up and ultimately wrote a cheque he couldn’t cash.

Usman dominated him and despite not being famed as a striker, he broke his opponent’s jaw in the third round before his TKO win in the fifth and final round.

Speaking after the fight, Masvidal said he thought that would be the last of Covington, especially since he had campaigned for the fight for so long.

“I don’t think he comes back,” the BMF champion said.

“24 minutes of beating his ass, and then put him out. And that’s that.”

When Masvidal clashes with Usman, on the surface, it looks like a very dangerous striker taking on a top-tier grappler.

However, as Usman proved in December, he has power to be reckoned with and Masvidal shouldn’t take his striking abilities lightly.

Covington got hurt badly against UsmanMasvidal, though, is already dreaming of wearing UFC gold.

Asked who he would like to defend his title against – should he emerge victorious at ‘Fight Island’ – he told ESPN rematches against Nate Diaz and Stephen Thompson are on his mind.
